Hercules, Zeus, Thor, Gilgamesh - these are the figures that leap to mind when we think of myth. But to David Leeming, myths are more than stories of deities and fantastic beings from non-Christian cultures. Myth is at once the most particular and the most universal feature of civilization, representing common concerns that each society voices in its own idiom. Whether an Egyptian story of creation or the big-bang theory of modern physics, myth is metaphor, mirroring our deepest sense of ourselves in relation to existence itself.
Now, in The World of Myth, Leeming provides a sweeping anthology of myths, ranging from ancient Egypt and Greece to the Polynesian islands and modern science. We read stories of great floods from the ancient Babylonians, Hebrews, Chinese, and Mayans; tales of apocalypse from India, the Norse, Christianity, and modern science; myths of the mother goddess from Native American Hopi culture and James Lovelock's Gaia. Leeming has culled myths from Aztec, Greek, African, Australian Aboriginal, Japanese, Moslem, Hittite, Celtic, Chinese, and Persian cultures, offering one of the most wide-ranging collections of what he calls the collective dreams of humanity.More important, he has organized these myths according to a number of themes, comparing and contrasting how various societies have addressed similar concerns, or have told similar stories.
In the section on dying gods, for example, both Odin and Jesus sacrifice themselves to renew the world, each dying on a tree. Such traditions, he proposes, may have their roots in societies of the distant past, which would ritually sacrifice their kings to renew the tribe. In The World of Myth, David Leeming takes us on a journey "not through a maze of falsehood but through a marvellous world of metaphor," metaphor for "the story of the relationship between the known and the unknown, both around us and within us." Fantastic, tragic, bizarre, sometimes funny, the myths he presents speak of the most fundamental human experience, a part of what Joseph Campbell called "the wonderful song of the soul's high adventure."

The World of Myth An Anthology (Audible Audio Edition) David Adams Leeming Jeremy Arthur Audible Studios Books Reviews
This book is informative but the writing is excruciatingly boring. I am reading it aloud to my son who has it as a text for a college mythology class. He is severely dyslexic, so I'm reading it to him. I have done this with him for years. Never have we had a book that is so hard to enjoy, so hard to stay awake through, whether on the reading side or listening side. I would have given it less than a three, but it does have the information. I apologize to the author; I just can't recommend it.
It is actually pretty interesting. And I am not a fan of reading but I pretty much like it.
I had to read this book for a college class I was taking. I found it to be quite entertaining and interesting. There were many stories in this book that were a total surprise to me. I often had papers to write in this class and the book provided a lot of information. It would not have been a book I would make a special trip to purchase had I not needed it for my class. However, I have placed it in my library of interesting reading and have recommended it to others.
I bought this book for a college class. I thought that I would end up stacking it with all of the rest. As I read the stories to do my homework, I began reading a whole lot more than I was required. The stories are short enough for the occasional reader to enjoy, but transition nicely for someone who wants to read a lot.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how similar all of our cultures really are. If we could all learn how similar we are, it would be easier for us to overlook our differences and learn to get along...
I also recommend this book for any history buffs, like me, who just enjoy reading tales from our ancestors...
Used for school, a great book!
For me, this book was hard to follow. Each section has an introduction (if you can call it that) that gives a little bit of information about the theme of the myths. It is followed by various myths or their excerpts. For me, the book was just a little bit boring and hard to follow. I didnt understand how the myths and the theme in each section related. I wish the author would have provided input to show how the myths related to each other or to a theme. I think the only part written by the author is the opening to each section, other than that, its just regurgitated myths losely linked together.
If you need this book for school, then get it, but if you want it for entertainment or self-education, I would choose a different book.
Educational, interesting read of all the myths from around the world.
